The Low Column Density Lyman-alpha Forest

چکیده

We develop an analytical method based on the lognormal approximation to compute the column density distribution of the Lyman-alpha forest in the low column density limit. We compute the column density distributions for six different cosmological models and found that the standard, COBE -normalized CDM model cannot fit the observations of the Lyman-alpha forest at z = 3. The amplitude of the fluctuations in that model has to be lowered by a factor of almost 3 to match observations. However, the currently viable cosmological models like the slightly tilted COBE -normalized CDM+Λ model, the CHDM model with Ων = 0.2, and the low-amplitude Standard CDM model are all in agreement with observations, to within the accuracy of our approximation, for the value of the cosmological baryon density at or higher than the old Standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis value of Ωbh 2 = 0.0125 for the currently favored value of the ionizing radiation intensity. With the low value for the baryon density inferred by Hogan & Rugers (1996), the models can only marginally match observations. Probing the universe with the Lyman-alpha forest: III. The mean opacity of the IGM

I apply the well controlled Hydro-PM approximation of Gnedin & Hui to study the consistency between the column density distribution of the Lyman-alpha forest and the mean opacity of the IGM for 25 different flat cosmological scenarios, including variants of the standard CDM, tilted CDM, CDM with a cosmological constant, and CHDMmodels. I show that observational data of Press, Rybicki, and Schne...

Probing the Universe with the Lyman-alpha Forest: I. Hydrodynamics of the Low Density IGM

We introduce an efficient and accurate alternative to full hydrodynamic simulations, Hydro-PM (HPM), for the study of the low column density Lyman-alpha forest (NHI ∼ 10 14 cm). It consists of a Particle-Mesh (PM) solver, modified to compute, in addition to the gravitational potential, an effective potential due to the gas pressure. Such an effective potential can be computed from the density f...

Explaining the Lyman-alpha forest

It is shown that many properties of Lyα forest absorbers can be derived using simple physical arguments. Analytical expressions are derived for the density and the size of an absorber as a function of its neutral hydrogen column density, which agree well with both observations and hydrodynamical simulations. An expression is presented to compute ΩIGM from the observed column density distributio...

The Column Density Distribution of the Lyman-Alpha Forest: A Measure of Small Scale Power

Lam Hui, Nickolay Y. Gnedin and Yu Zhang Absorption lines in the Lyα forest can be thought of as peaks in neutral hydrogen density along lines of sight. The column density distribution (the number density of absorption lines as a function of column density) is then a statistic of density peaks, which contains information about the underlying power spectrum. In particular, we show that the slope...
